Mark Russell JonesAmerican, b.1968
Mark Russell Jones’ paintings explore the relationship between abstraction and landscape. Drawing on photographs and studies gathered through his travels, he develops compositions that distil the qualities of light, atmosphere and space. He studied painting at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, where he received his BFA with distinction.
Working primarily in oil, Jones transforms observed landscapes through a process of layering and reduction. His restrained compositions emphasise subtle shifts in colour, texture and light, balancing recognisable forms with abstraction.
Jones has exhibited widely across the United States since 1996. His work is held in private collections throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. He lives and works between the coast of California and mid-coast Maine.
